Teacher and Student Support Each Others Dream

Kids don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. As a teacher, I try to take the time to learn something about each one of them and log it into my memory bank.
Some kids, I can say, "Okay this is what we're going to be doing today." And some will hop to it right away. For others, I have to bargain with them. This is where I tap into my memory bank. Roc, is one of those students.
When Roc learned that I wrote books, he and a lot of the students in the class were shocked. I don't go to work and talk about my accomplishments. Instead, I try to show my students what they can accomplish. However, when one asks, "What good will English class do me?" Then, I have to let them know some of the possibilities.
With each book, I try to do something different and the Girl, PLEASE! book was no different. With this book, I asked R&B Group, Entrance to put together a soundtrack and they did. Roc said to me,"Why didn't you ask me to be on the soundtrack."
It had never occurred to me to ask. I told him, "It's not too late." And it wasn't. Roc put together an amazing rap song entitled, "Girl, PLEASE!" As long as Roc keeps doing what he's supposed to do in class, Jahzara will promote him and see that his dream becomes a reality.

How About You Walk In My Shoes?

About a month ago, I was reading a magazine and a woman stated that she lost 70 pounds because of her shoes. At the time, I was on a myriad of meds, trying to shake this bad cold I had. I threw the magazine down and said, "That's it!! I'm going to bed." Yet, I couldn't get the title out of my mind. So, I read the article and sure enough this woman who had given birth and was unable to shed the weight gain said her shoes made her lose weight.

So, I thought that's absurd. I conducted research on the shoes: MBT. These shoes are designed to improve your posture, strengthen your muscles, and tone your body. After detailed research, I posed the question, do I purchase a treadmill or these walking shoes. The price was about the same. So, needless to say the shoes are not cheap. I said to myself, "Quit playing, you know you're not goint to be on that treadmill everyday like you should. And you're really going to be mad if you buy it and it just takes up space, but you will wear the shoes." So what I love shoes. The shoes won.

It's been a month and I lost 7 pounds. Now, I'll tell you, this month I'm going to step my game up and actually exercise, and eat better. I wonder how much I'll lose next month.

Driving Shirtless
Thailand

Don’t let the tropical weather tempt you to joy ride with your shirt off in Thailand. Police can (and do) hand out tickets if they spot you topless while driving a car or motorcycle.

Penalty: A mere slap on the wrist (or sun-burned shoulders). Tickets go for a few hundred baht (about $10).

Paying in Pennies
Canada

Canada’s Currency Act of 1985 sets out the guidelines for how coins should be used, including reasonable limits for the shelling out of endless coins. What’s reasonable? Don’t try using all coins to buy something that costs $10, or even using all one-dollar coins (sometimes called “loonies”) to pay for an item that costs more than $25. But then, what kind of loonie wants to carry so many coins anyway?

Penalty: If the seller actually wants to take all your pennies, he can, but by law he can also tell you to scram.

No Kissing at Train Stations
France and England

By some accounts, April 5, 1910 was the day romance died on French railways: Kissing was reportedly banned to help deter lover-induced rail delays. But the law seems to be unheard of today. “Are you sure this isn’t a law in Great Britain?” a French spokeswoman at the consulate asked us. What a coincidence: It turns out that Virgin Trains has recently posted “No Kissing” signs at its station in Warrington Bank Quay, in northwest England.

Penalty: While there’s no penalty now for train-related kissing in France, the folks at Warrington Bank Quay will politely ask you to move your smooching to the designated “kissing zone” near the car park.

Driving a Dirty Car
Moscow

Some say this is just an excuse for Moscow police to over-ticket drivers, but you should still watch the filth factor on your rental car. How dirty is dirty? That’s unclear. A recent newspaper survey explored the idea of how to even define “dirty” — almost half said a car was too filthy if you couldn’t read the license plate, while 9 percent said the determining factor was if you couldn’t see the driver.

Penalty: You can get a ticket. Fines might be, shall we say, open to interpretation. Here is a case where you might politely offer to pay the officer up front — $100 should cover it — and be on your way.

Strolling in a Bathing Suit
Grenada

Visiting cruise-ship passengers have gotten under the skin of the local police in Grenada, who cringe at tourists walking off the beach during their shore excursions and into town wearing nothing but their swimsuits. The police chief instituted a fine, and supposedly has also expressed interest in fining folks who wear their jeans too low.

Penalty: In theory, a $270 ticket, though the tourist board assures us that they don’t think it has really been enforced.

Driving With Headlights Off
Denmark

Renting a car? You must always drive with headlights on, says the law in Denmark, to distinguish you from a parked car. Do the Danes really drive so slow that there’d be any confusion? Actually, studies have found that other drivers are more aware of surrounding vehicles when other cars’ lights are on, thus reducing accidents. The law may get adopted across the European Union.

Penalty: Driving without headlights will get you a fine of a little under $100.

Chewing Gum
Singapore

Feeding birds, spitting, and not flushing public toilets will also get you in trouble. Singapore’s most quirky-seeming laws stem from the government’s well-meaning desire to keep things tidy — and let’s face it, gum wads, pigeon droppings, and unflushed toilets aren’t pretty. The infamous gum law actually loosened up in 2004, and Nicorette is now legal (though you have to get it through a doctor and they take down names). Selling regular gum is more of a problem than just casually chewing it, a spokesman says. And more changes are on the way: Gambling will become legal later in 2009, and you can now legally dance on top of bars.

Penalty: About $100 a ticket, especially for leaving a toilet un-flushed; many public loos auto-flush, we learned, but it’s wise to double-check on your way out.

"I DIDN'T KNOW HE WAS A FRAUD"

"I didn't know he was a fraud," is what I'm hearing all too often. I nod my head when I hear this. It's not one of those, "Girl-You-Stupid" type of sarcastic nods. You know the look that people give you when they think they have it all together. Nope, mine is a "Girl-I-Know" type of nod. I can relate. Been there. Done that. Often, some of you hear me laugh and joke about "Malachi Chandler". I'm able to do that now after ten plus years. But initially, the pain, hurt and bitterness was there. I wished that I had known then what I knew shortly after saying, "I Do" and I'm certain I would have said, "Are you out of your cotton picking mind?"
Well, I've done my best to put together a manual to help screen out "Mr. Wrong". I wished this manual had been available at the time Malachi and I were dating and perhaps, I would have run for the nearest exit.
I am asking you to help me to give these manuals away to women who could benefit from the information contained in the pages. Perhaps it's you, your sister, your co-worker, or a stranger whose life you may impact.

I had the honor of speaking with Demetra Reid today by telephone. She is an amazing woman. She is the president of w.o.m.e.n. EO which is a phenemonal organization (do an internet search). We were discussing the current situation and our country is facing and I asked her if might use her poem in my blog and she granted permission. I could give you my opinion about the situation, but Ms. Reid does such an eloquent job in her poem Give America Back to God, read for yourself.

First, let me start off by saying I purposely left out the helping verb "are" in the title for effect as well as left off the "g" in living. I am educated, have degrees and certifications and still that won't be enough to make it into heaven.

How are you living? Don't turn around and look at someone else or even ask someone to validate how you're living. In your heart you know how you're living. So ask yourself if Jesus were to come back right now- at this moment. What would he find? We don't have as much time as we think we have. You probably don't want to hear this but it's true. However, if you're not where you know you need to be, it's not too late. You can make the change right now.

Another Woman's Husband

I recently read Angel Mechelle's Another Woman's Husband and it was a good read. Prior to reading it, I had my own preconcieved notion about the other woman, Bree. However, after reading the book my attitude about infidelity remains the same. I'm not for it, but my heart softened toward Bree.
My question for today is: Who deserves the blame when cheating occurs in a marriage? Is it the man's fault when he goes out and cheats? Is it his wife's fault that he cheats? I mean does she put a gun to his head and force him to cheat? What is the responsibility of the other woman? Is it possible to be in love with two individuals at the same time?
